Cedar Blanket Chest

Cedar Blanket Chest

This Western Red Cedar blanket chest ships flat-packed as a kit and assembles at home in about 1½ hours. Flat packing is what keeps shipping affordable on a piece this size. It holds blankets, pillows and other household items, with room for two duvets and a pillow. Most cedar chests sold today are cedar-lined, meaning a thin layer of aromatic cedar over plywood or hardwood. This one is solid cedar all the way through. I make the parts from clear, knot-free cedar milled in my own shop, with clean lines and visible grain throughout.

Why This Chest is Different

  • Solid cedar throughout, with no plywood or veneer
  • All of the cedar is quarter-sawn for straight vertical grain and dimensional stability
  • Full one-inch rough-sawn boards are planed and sanded to their finished thickness
  • No fasteners are visible on the finished chest
  • Panels arrive already glued up and sanded, so there is no gluing at your end
  • Clamps are included to hold the legs in position while you fasten them
  • 305 and 316 stainless-steel fasteners are used throughout
  • Each chest is made and prepared by me in small batches

Western Red Cedar naturally varies in colour from one board to another. I select a mixture of lighter and darker pieces so each chest shows the natural contrast and character of the cedar.

The chest is sized to sit at the foot of a bed without crowding the room, and the lid is flat enough to use as a surface. It also works in an entryway or a living room.

Finish and Care

The chest arrives unstained, so the cedar is at its most fragrant when you open the box.

You can apply a clear finish or oil if you want added surface protection, but I would leave the inside bare. Sealing the interior closes off the cedar scent, which is the main reason people keep blankets and linens in a cedar chest in the first place.

    Assembly

Assembly generally takes about 1½ hours. You will need:

    • An electric drill
    • A tape measure

The chest ships as 26 pieces, all predrilled and finish-sanded before packing. The kit includes full-colour assembly instructions, stainless-steel hardware, a driver bit and the leg clamps.

    Made in Canada

I make the parts for every chest in my workshop in British Columbia, Canada, from clear, knot-free old-growth Western Red Cedar. I buy the logs, quarter-saw them and kiln dry the boards in my own shop, then select the stock for each kit. Every piece is cut, glued, sanded and predrilled here before it is packed. Quarter-sawing produces vertical grain, meaning straight even lines down the length of each board instead of the wide arcs you get from flat-sawn lumber. It is also the most stable way to cut cedar, which matters on wide glued panels that will spend their life in a heated house.
