Folding Cedar Lounger

Folding Cedar Lounger

The folding design is what sets this cedar lounger apart. It folds in half without tools when you want to store it, while the removable headrest lets you adjust the setup to suit how you use it. I build each lounger from clear, knot-free old-growth Western Red Cedar using quarter-sawn lumber I mill in-house. As a full-length outdoor lounge chair, it is well suited to a patio, deck or poolside area.

Designed to Fold for Storage

Dedicated stainless-steel shoulder bolts and nyloc nuts form the folding points, allowing the two sections of the frame to pivot while remaining securely fastened. When folded, the lounger takes up less space for storage without requiring any hardware to be removed.

The two-slat headrest can be taken off when you prefer a simpler setup. The seating area is also sized to work with many commonly available outdoor chair cushions.

Construction Details

The lounger ships as an unassembled kit, with the cedar parts prepared and packed for assembly. It is built from individual slats fastened to the shaped frame sections that form the seat, back and leg support.

The folding points use shoulder bolts with nyloc nuts, while the remaining hardware includes 305 and 316 stainless-steel fasteners. The parts are pre-drilled and countersunk where required, and all surfaces are finish-sanded before packing.

Dimensions

  • Length: 72 in / 183 cm
  • Width: 21 in / 53 cm
  • Height: 26 in / 66 cm
  • Weight: approximately 24 lb / 11 kg

Finish and Care

I ship the lounger unfinished, leaving you the choice to let the cedar weather naturally or apply a protective finish. Outdoors, unfinished Western Red Cedar gradually turns silver-grey over time, and some surface checking can develop as the wood expands and contracts with changing conditions.

The finish shown in the product photos is Sico ProLuxe Primary Coat RE1 in the Natural tint. After testing different finishes on the cedar I mill, this is the one I recommend when you want to slow the weathering process and retain more of the wood’s natural colour.

Assembly

The lounger arrives as an unassembled kit made up of 35 wooden pieces, with full-colour instructions and all required hardware included.

Assembly requires an electric drill, pencil, tape measure, and a 10 mm or 3/8-inch wrench or socket with a ratchet. I also include a seat-slat spacing tool, Allen key and the required driver bit.

The video below shows the assembly process step by step.
