Cosmetic Second Cedar Adirondack Chair

Cosmetic Second Cedar Adirondack Chair

These cosmetic-second Adirondack chairs are made from parts set aside during production of my regular cedar chairs. A hidden knot may be revealed inside an otherwise clear board during cutting, or a chip or other cosmetic imperfection may occur while a part is being machined. Rather than discard usable cedar, I set these pieces aside until I have enough suitable parts to build a complete chair. The chair uses the same design and construction as my regular Adirondack chair; the difference is cosmetic appearance.

What to Expect from a Cosmetic Second Chair

No two cosmetic-second chairs look exactly the same. One may have a small exposed knot, another a chipped edge or machining mark, and some imperfections may end up on less-visible parts once the chair is assembled.

These differences affect appearance rather than how the chair is intended to function.

I only offer cosmetic-second chairs when I have accumulated enough suitable parts to make a complete kit, which is usually only once or twice per year.

Same Adirondack Chair Design

The cosmetic-second chair uses the same design as my regular Adirondack chair, including the wide arms and dual cross braces that support the frame.

The hardware includes 305 and 316 stainless-steel fasteners, and the parts are pre-drilled and countersunk where required. All surfaces are finish-sanded before the chair is packed as an unassembled kit.

  • Width: 32 in / 81 cm
  • Height: 37 in / 94 cm
  • Length: 35 in / 89 cm
  • Weight: approximately 27 lb / 12.2 kg
  • Seat-to-back angle: 100 degrees
  • Arm width: 7 in / 18 cm

Finish and Care

The chair ships unfinished. You can leave the cedar natural or apply the finish of your choice, but any visible knots, chips or other cosmetic marks will remain part of the finished chair.

Left outdoors without a finish, Western Red Cedar will gradually weather to a silver-grey colour, and some surface checking can develop over time.

For customers who want to retain more of the cedar’s natural colour, I recommend Sico ProLuxe Primary Coat RE1 in the Natural tint. This is the finish shown on my regular Adirondack chair and the one I recommend after testing different options on the cedar I mill.

Assembly

The cosmetic-second Adirondack chair ships as an unassembled kit with full-colour instructions and all required hardware included.

Assembly requires a tape measure, an 11 mm or 7/16-inch wrench or socket with a ratchet, and an electric drill. The parts are pre-drilled where required to help make assembly straightforward. Allow approximately 1½ to 2 hours for assembly.

The video below shows the assembly process step by step.
