Cedar Wood Adirondack Footrest

This cedar Adirondack footrest, sometimes called an Adirondack ottoman, is designed to pair naturally with my Adirondack chair, while also working with other outdoor seating where the height and proportions are a suitable fit. I build each one from clear, knot-free old-growth Western Red Cedar using lumber I mill quarter-sawn in-house.

A Separate Footrest for Adirondack-Style Seating 

The footrest sits independently from the chair rather than attaching to it. This lets you adjust the distance to suit how you prefer to sit, move it to either side when getting in or out of the chair, or put it away when you do not need it.

I designed the shape to provide a gradual support for your legs rather than a flat stool-like surface. It pairs naturally with my Adirondack chair, but it can also be used with other Adirondack-style and outdoor chairs where the height and proportions are a suitable fit.

Construction Details

The curved main supports give the footrest its gradual shape and provide a solid base for the cedar slats. The slats are proportioned to complement the seat slats of my Adirondack chair, giving the two pieces a consistent look when used together.

Each part is planed, shaped, rounded over and finish-sanded before packing. The pieces are pre-drilled and countersunk where required to make assembly straightforward.

The hardware includes 305 and 316 stainless-steel fasteners, along with the required driver bit for assembly.

Finish and Care

The footrest ships unstained so you can leave the cedar natural or apply the finish of your choice. Left unfinished outdoors, Western Red Cedar will gradually weather to a silver-grey colour, and some surface checking can occur as the wood responds to changes in moisture and temperature.

For customers who want to preserve more of the cedar’s natural colour, I recommend Sico ProLuxe Primary Coat RE1 in the Natural tint. This is the finish I use in the product photos after testing different options on the cedar I mill.

Assembly

The footrest ships as an unassembled kit with full-colour instructions and all required hardware. Assembly requires an electric drill and an 11 mm or 7/16-inch wrench or socket with a ratchet.
